26.Mar.2009 Dixie Friend Gay visits Mosaika
Longtime collaborating artist Dixie Friend Gay arrived in Montreal yesterday to oversee the final touches and corrections on a private commission she designed, destined for a ranch in Houston, Texas.
The 144 sq. ft. ceramic mural is made from hand-glazed tiles, some of which are textured and modeled to interpret her style of painting. Installation is slated for mid-May – check the installation blog to follow the team installing this beautiful mural.
Dixie is no stranger to Mosaika, having 2 other artworks translated into mosaics for both public and private spaces. Most recently, she designed a large scale ceramic mural located in the entrance lobby of the Chevron HQ in Covington, Louisiana in 2008. She has also worked with Mosaika to create a series of eight mosaics for the Benmar Bridge in Houston, Texas in 2006. These smalti critters show the translation accomplished by Mosaika, and the preservation of detail of the original paintings.
Dixie is visiting the studio also to work with Saskia on a new project for ‘The Woodlands’ near Houston, Texas. This multi-medium mosaic will be over 700 sq. ft., and will be comprised of ceramic, smalti and natural stone. Production is now underway.
Included below are some photos of Dixie and Saskia selecting materials and discussing textures and treatments to use in The Woodlands project.
Check the blog soon to follow this project’s progress.
