Joe Wilson is a Coast Salish artist who was born in 1967, and raised at Koksilah near the small city of Duncan on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. His keen interest in native art began at the tender age of 12 whilst watching his stepfather, Johnny Sampson, design and carve beautiful native artworks. However, fierce competition with his younger brother, Rick, motivated Joe to take his artistry seriously: “That’s when I frustratingly started really applying myself. Even back then I had it in my heart to be one of the best out there in our field [Coast Salish Territory] and I did it.”

His colours are bold and unconventional, yet extremely appealing and rich.

His work is not only authentic by native tradition, it is also an artistic communication link between cultures.

Joe’s talent continue to bring him the recognition that is reserved for outstanding artists.

Hello. I am hosting an event at Uptown Mall in Victoria, BC on August 3rd from 9-11am. The event will take place in the concourse around the mosaic. I would like to get permission from you +/- Joe Wilson to share an image of the mosaic in the event promotion and to take an aerial photo of the group gathering around the mosaic.

It would also be really lovely to connect with Joe directly if you happen to have his contact (he is hard to track down 🙂 The event is a free community gathering (zero commercial interest) to bring our community together and celebrate World Breastfeeding Week (https://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/).
