Equinox, © Michael Jones 2024, hand-glazed ceramic tile, Byzantine smalti glass, 70′ x 15′, Atlanta Airport Station, Atlanta GA
Commissioned by: MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) Artbound
Titled Equinox, artist Michael Jones takes inspiration from the liminal space in Airport Station between the north and south terminals, and from the equinox when night and day are equal in length and the potential for transformation is awakened.
His goal was to “create a piece that captures the moment of growth, transition and transformation.”
A 30-year resident of Atlanta and graduate of Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD), Jones has completed large-scale public murals throughout the country.
His work has been shown at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, and in Atlanta at Eyedrum, Swan Coach House, and Whitespace/Whitespec Gallery, as well as Tempus Project in Tampa.
